Founded in 1993, Electra Bikes is one of California’s top selling bike brands. The concept behind Electra bikes has always been to meld high-tech elegance with accessibility. Designed in Vista, California but manufactured China, Electra began by focusing on Cruisers. Now, they have a full range of electric bike models. For this review, we’ll be focusing on the Electra Townie Go! 7D Step Thru and Step Over bike model.
Priced at $1,499.00, the Electra Townie Go is a high-end bike that proves accessible to riders from all backgrounds. Despite offering plenty of pricey components, the Electra Townie Go is available in two frame styles and a whopping seven color choices. High-step frame versions come with 27.5” tires, while the step-thru options are better for small-medium frames with 26” tires. There are gender neutral color options on the step-thru, for guys or girls who may be shorter in stature or dealing with knee sensitivities.
This is a class 1 electric bike with three distinct levels of assist that can be discerned on an easy-to-read dimmable LED display. Though this bike looks luxurious, it speaks in minimalistic volumes. Buttons are easy to use and sparse in design. There is limited clutter in terms of routed internal cables. Like similar electric bikes, the Townie Go features easy grip shifters to operate the 7-speed Shimano cassette with optional wide 14-34 tooth freewheel capacity.
A 250-Watt Hydrive Rear-Mounted Gear Hub motor can help you to reach top speeds of 20 MPH, while large 180mm mechanical disc brakes offer adequate stopping power. Wide 2.35” tires offer up stability for light trail use, while a wide saddle with elastomers makes for a comfortable ride. The unit is equipped with a Hydrive 309Wh, rear rack mounted battery that can take you on a maximum ride of 40 miles. Minimum range is 20 miles. Battery charge time is a scant 3.5 hours. Patented Flat Foot Technology and a Hydrive Electric-Assist System truly make this bike shine.
It is worth noting that the Electra Townie Go! does not include a suspension fork. Instead, it relies on the larger tires, wide saddle, high-rise bar, and included comfort grips to absorb rough terrain or bumps in the road. However, if a suspension fork is important, you can purchase a 27.mm suspension seat post for added comfort. It should also be stated that the 7D platform stands for 7-speed with derailleur, not in terms of an internally geared hub.
Overall, the Electra Townie Go! 7D Step Thru bike is an affordable option for anyone looking for varied frame sizes, fun colors, and a long-range. With a powerful motor and a steady battery, this is a bike built for whatever a rider has in mind.
