PROS:
  • The first thing you notice about the Hurley Mini Swell is its striking design. Not only does the Mini Swell look great, but it is comfortable. Comfort comes from the suspension fork and plush seat. But those 4" wide tires are squishy and absorb bumps and vibrations while riding.
  • You can expect a high fun factor with this bike too. The 20" wheels work well with the bike's low center of gravity, giving you nimble handling and wide smiles.
  • Another advantage of those tires is that the large contact patch with the ground spreads the weight of you and the bike. Therefore, you can ride on soft ground such as sand. But you also get lots of traction when riding on paved roads, giving you confidence.
CONS:
  • The Hurley Mini Swell isn't the most practical bike, though. There are no cargo racks or fenders, so it may not be the best bike for daily use.

You will love the Hurley Mini Swell if fun is at the top of your list. You can ride this bike on most surfaces, as long as you don’t get too ambitious. It may not be the most practical electric bike, but practicality isn’t everyone’s priority. You can always wear a backpack and still have an entertaining ride.

In recent years, surf brand Hurley has diversified to offer more to its loyal customer base. Part of this initiative is to provide a range of electric bikes to suit the beach culture lifestyle. And one of the more interesting ebikes in the Hurly range is the Mini Swell.

This sub $2,000 electric bike is fun to ride, comfortable, and offers a mini motorbike-style of riding.

The muscular-looking Hurley Mini Swell has a potent 500W motor that takes you to a limited assisted top speed of 20mph. This motor has plenty of torque, which makes riding uphill super easy. But the torque also comes in handy when you need to power along the beach in deep sand.

You can get 40 miles from the 48V 10Ah battery, depending on how you use it and the terrain you are riding on. Depending on your mood, you can ride this bike using pedal-assist or take it easy with the throttle mode.

The robust steel frame will last for a long time, even though it isn’t the lightest. But the mechanical disc brakes do an excellent job of keeping the weight in control, adding to the bike’s safety.

As we said before, you can get 40 miles between charges. This is helped by the Shimano 6-speed drivetrain, which also gives you an extra boost of pedaling speed when you need it.

The suspension fork helps with traction on loose surfaces, but it also dampens vibrations from the road. It is not something that will work well on mountain bike trails, but it significantly improves comfort.

There are a few shipping options from Jenson USA, but you can get your Hurley Mini Swell the next day if you are based in California.
